i was bored today and decided to watch a movie from my external hard disk when i discovered the handover video made by the 0506
exco when we took over last year. and so i decided to watch that instead (yes, its 40
mins long, almost as long as an episode of heroes)
anyway, the video really covered it all. the fun, the friends, the sweet victories, the hard work and sweat. and i realised that,
i'm never gonna experience all that again in that same exhilarating mix. like
imy said in the video, the range will
nvr look the same again. and its true, once
ur back as a senior, its different. so i just
thot i'd like to write down all my thoughts before one day i forget what it felt like to be there. and i
nvr really did pen down my handover thoughts,
nvr did say what i wanted to the new
exco. so here goes, its a bit rusty, 5 months in storage and all but its still what i feel =)
* * * * * *
when we took over as
exco in early
july last year, the feeling was surreal. it was like we'd suddenly been left on our own (just the 8 of us, then minus 2) to make HUGE decisions as to the future of the club. there were so many things to think about that for that first few
mins there, i felt regret. i wondered if
i'd entered into something too big for me to handle. i was afraid, that we
werent going to be able to match up with
wat the previous
exco had accomplished.
for the first time since entering nus archery, i felt like we were the only ones truly INTO the club at that moment. the seniors were off happily celebrating the fact that a huge load of responsibility had slid off their shoulders and there weren't any juniors to speak of yet.
and the first few months were really trial and error for all of us. we grew to know each other even more deeply than we did before, we made decisions together (most of
hte time), quarrelled and argued over equally important and unimportant stuff and learned from our mistakes.
and then, school started, and we recruited a brand new batch of archers. our new junior com.
finally, we weren't the only ones passionate about the club and the sport anymore, new blood! trainings started as well and it was good to see the seniors come back, it started to feel like old days again, except that not everyone came back, and definitely not as often. we tried our best to create the same atmosphere and spirit for the juniors as we had gone
thru a year back. all the
camaraderie, lame jokes, close friendships. and although, we never did have as many archery outings as we did with our seniors when we were juniors, i'm still amazed that we managed to form so many close ties. even taking modules together and everything. i remember being particularly glad that the juniors were also bonding amongst themselves. not sure about everyone else, but for me, it was the friendships in the club, the people that kept me coming back to it. some wouldve said that perhaps i've been too friendly and too close with the juniors that it ultimately blurred the line between the 2 of groups and stripped us of whatever authority that we had. but .. . .. i dunno. . . on one hand, it did feel like that towards the end, but that feeling was a good feeling. anyway, i just wanted to say that i was really glad that as the year passed, our juniors individually began proving themselves, whether in terms of shooting, cell work or both. several became people that i could depend on (and throw more sai gang to) and it became easier and easier to teach them about the running of hte club and our individual cell head roles and stuff like that when understudy period came around.
I wouldve liked to say that everyone was one big happy family, but i noe thats not the case. i could see that there were cliques and ppl werent bonding as much with other cliques. perhaps that is why, when the current exco took over, there also seems to be cliques amongst them. it is inevitable that the dominant ones take over, as in all groups, and the quieter ones fall by the side. come to think of it, i think i was probably a rather dominant one too. i think. i remember vaguely arguing and pushing my point all the time. hmm.
although i'd have to say that we never really did have a clique problem when we were juniors. it was more like a gender divide than anythign else. or maybe i was just too in my own world to notice any cliques if they formed. although i really think there werent any. or that many for htat matter. i think. hmm. i cant really remember, my junior year seems to be a blur of activities, medals and fun.
anyway, handover came for us quicker than i'd expected. perhaps i was reluctant to let go. it seemed like we'd just gotten comfortable as exco, learned through all our mistakes the first time round and now we'd have to give up our seats.
on that last day, it struck me that we'd nvr again have the opportunity to work together like we did in the past year. nvr be able to lead the juniors, teach them new things, organize succesfull events, curse and swear and sweat profusely while organizing these events. and going down to the nitty gritty details to make sure everything was going to plan. was abit sad at letting go, but i'm glad that we had a solid group of juniors to take over. it makes me proud to see where they are now coz i helped shaped their passion for this sport =) i'm glad that we helped put great archery memories into their junior year lives, enough for them to want to step up and lead the new batch.
like i said, its rather patchy and its most likely that i've forgotten a whole lot of other significant happenings but, heres the bulk of it. raw and 5 mths in storage. well, u have to understand that i really didnt have as much time then as i have now.
oh! and its now, halfway across the world, and in a different time zone and definitely different climate, that i miss everyone the most. i miss the lounge, i miss the range, i miss my bow, i miss my arrows, i miss friday nights at RVR, and the list goes on.
